Together Apart

Felicity Johns

Like wind that roars and whispers

across this great divide

this chasm of yawning distance

where only yearning hides

We laugh and dance and wait here

while the sun falls yet again

the hearts that slept for so many years

begin to reawaken-

Promises that grow from broken earth

so fragile yet unarrested

bend beneath a new love’s birth

whose wings are yet untested

And red fire dawn that softly kisses

a dark sea’s sallow cheek

will rise like Phoenix from these ashes

and show your soul to me-

For no amount of time or space

can damp down such a flame

as this that makes our two hearts race

inside this summer rain

Like winds that roar and whisper

across these thousand miles

you’ll feel my lips, my fingers

and my touch will make you smile.
