How much do you actually know about the once great and thriving city of Binghamton, NY? People who live here may hate on the city but you can’t deny that it has some pretty cool roots. I am by no means touching on all or even most of the history because I want to keep it relatively short and sweet, so here are some basics you should know.
Everyone knows about all the jobs brought in by IBM but what happened before that? Cigars and Shoes! In the late 19th century, Binghamton ranked 2nd in the production of cigars, beat out only by NYC. We can thank some of the huge multi-story brick buildings remaining in downtown to this industry. Endicott-Johnson Shoes, originally Lester Brothers Boot and Shoe Company, outgrew their downtown location and moved down the river.
