When most people think of jobs that men do, they think of anything that involves something with business, engineering, or something in the medical field (doctor). But there are men who are nurses, elementary/middle school teachers, counselors, social workers, and convention planners. These jobs, known as pink collared jobs, are dominated by women in the work place.
When men have these pink collared jobs, they go against the functionalist perspective. Meaning, men are not living up to their full potential and should be taking more instrumental roles instead of expressive roles. The functionalist perspective indirectly portrays the stereotypical ideals of what a “typical man” should be.
What I found to be very interesting was men typically get paid more than women if they are working in the same “pink collared” profession. Men typically feel “fast tracked” into certain leadership roles. This is a perfect example of the glass escalator, where…
