Model trains form reality,

In the minds of those who see…

Creative acts

Always “exacts,”

Limits to functionality!

The prototype diesel-electric,

ALCO RS-1 is expected…

Weighs many ton

Is smoky when run,

And it’s price…well, that’s copacetic!

The model is a certain scale,

Reduced from the full-sized on rails…

Large scales may run

Like the real one,

For most–electric motors prevail!

What they’re made of–not the same–

Real work versus a game…

Heavy metals versus plastic

Differences drastic,

Although the smaller mimics the name!

–Jonathan Caswell

The author’s favorite diesel-electric train locomotive is the ALCO RS-1—and his favorite railroad is (among others) the New Haven.
