BIRD SONG

BIRD SONG

Mourning dove,mourning dove–

How are you today…

Your gentle cry I happened by,

You sound so far away!

Mourning dove, mourning dove….

How do you fare…

Have you made a goodly nest,

Surviving young with care?

Mourning dove, mourning dove…

The winter draweth near…

Many bird soon go south,

Will you be lodging here?

–Jonathan Caswell

LITTLE BIRDS DO IT AGAIN…AND AGAIN…!

LITTLE BIRDS DO IT AGAIN…AND AGAIN…!

Those little birds’ family urging,

Mays way for multiple merging…

Two or three per season

For gene line increasin’

Making survival encouraging.

One nest I observed regularly,

Did two broods that season–nearly three–

The third brood lost

With early frost,

But two brood matured completely!

Little birds sure get down,

Their energy  does really astound…

Two batches, nearly three,

Brought to maturity,

Their summer of love covers ground!!!!

SUMMER NIGHT’S SOUL MUSIC

SUMMER NIGHT’S SOUL MUSIC

Walikng back to the car

At midnight to go home…

I hear a different sound afar,

Croaking starting low.

A different frog than peepers

Taking o’er the swamp…

A few tentative voices

Before it starts to ramp.

I wouldn’t want to be a fly

When the big bullfrogs come…

I know that I’d be quick to die

Hearing that “JUGGA-RUM!!!”

LITTLE MILLER FLYING

LITTLE MILLER FLYING

A little miller flying

Around inside…

Thinks my computer

A place to abide.

Till I come

Scaring this white moth

Away down the hall

To find a safer loft!

AVIAN ADAPTION

AVIAN ADAPTION

On an inner canopy edge

Little birds sit and wait…

When another flues by

They ask them for a date!

Ornamental recesses

In a cinder block wall…

A bird couple presses

Into breeding halls.

Birds use those canopy lights

In finding something to eat…

Bugs and moths attracted to lights

A bird’s nutrition completes.

Larger birds find that

Lawn sprinklers mankind hath….

Make the perfect excuse for

A quickie shower bath!

TOYING WITH TANKA

TOYING WITH TANKA

Been taken as a fool

A two-hundred dollar school,

Burning with laughter

Their laughter–smiling at me

Smilingly to the bank vault!

Successful robins

Pulling worms out at their will

Feeding generation

Filling nests of happy broods

Serenading the damp woods!

ROBINS’ QUANDRY

ROBINS’ QUANDRY

Supposedly, robins are here,

Robin red-breast with spring cheer…

With all our snow

No “worm-burgers” show,

Just seeds and berries in the clear.

Hard to set territories

With winter still in its glories…

Landmarks they lack

(They’re under snowpack),

Just adding to an early bird’s worries.

Melting happens this week,

Which will at least fill up the c reek…

Till dry land

Robins can

Watch snow melt in a year that’s unique!
