SHE’S ALL THE TALK!

SHE’S ALL THE TALK!

Great big turtle on her walk,

Becomes subject of all talk…

In shadow beneath a van,

Moves herself when she can;

Moving slowly toward her swamp

In the annual egg-laying tromp.

PARTICULARLY THE PEEPERS!

PARTICULARLY THE PEEPERS!

Night-time rain fills vernal pools,

Male wood frogs peep like fools…

Trying to sound worth more than weight

Enticing that perfect date,

Pools may dry up fast:

Quickly find a love to last!

Lasting means a gel of eggs

Sprouting tails and sprouting legs…

All you ladies come my way

Before we see the light of day:

Before this pubble evaportates away!

THE GEESE ARE BACK

THE GEESE ARE BACK!

A rain-soaked empty parking lot,

Two geese fly over and land…

They find the banking with wet grass

To nibble on demand.

The anti-goose forces

Must be shut in because of the rain…

Not many actually havereturned–

Success has been attained.

Not many geese come near the walk,

We have one nesting pair…

They seem to ttake it all in stride

Exiled away from here!

AN AUTUMN SILENCE

AN AUTUMN SILENCE

Gone are the chirps of cicada and kin,

Gone are the songs of birds…

Cooler weather has rolled in

And wind-driven rain disturbs.

Silent pitter-patter on our canopied walk,

Foreshadowing a different sound…

Sidewalls await installation

Shielding from sudden snow squalls.

Rain-soaked ground is soil prepared

For a solid winter freeze…

Bugs and turtles soon prepare

The wait until a warm springtime breeze.

WARM WEATHER HAIKU

WARM WEATHER HAIKU

Air conditioners

Softly flowing night time wind…

Cool enough, without.

Parking in the shade,

Handicapped zone is filled up…

Worth the extra walk.

Wild families grow,

No fishercats seen this year…

The woods hide many lives.

Flowers open wide,

Bees work among the petals…

Aroma lures all.

HOT JUNE DAYS

HOT JUNE DAYS

(tune: “Animal Crackers in My Soup”–to sing it!)

Sudden spreading algae blooms

Cover quiet pond lagoons,

Lily pads bursting out so far…

Cradling gentle lily stars!

Sweat drips down like salty rain

Making us shower all over again,

Grass grows quicker than we mow…

Professionally planted flowers show.

Rain clouds come to wet the ground,

Thunder and lightning slow us down

To enjoy a quiet book…

Or resting in a favorite nook!

FORSYTHIA PHALANXES

FORSYTHIA PHALANXES

Knobby stems start to sprout,

But not with green leaves….

Rather with yellow flowers shout:

Welcome back, you bees!

Yellow flowing over walls,

Trellises like waterfalls…

Exploding the brown of spring

Till flowers and grass appear!

Some are bushes strictly trimmed,

Others growing pale and slim…

Forsythia roams around

Wherever it can grow!

Thankful we, for instant light,

That promises a “real good” fight…

Vanquishing the doldrums here

By many yellow sprouts!

THE MAILMAN NOTICED

THE MAILMAN NOTICED

The Thursday mailman took stock

Of our increasing flock…

Of summering geese

In their love feast,

An idea that does not shock.
