IS THAT DIRT?

Tiny little dirt piles

All along the walk…

Miniature grains

Dug  up from the plains

Beside a plant stalk.

Tiny regular dirt piles–

Oh look–it moves!

Mini ants

Swarming to chance

Being squashed by feet with shoes!

Tiny ant domiciles,

Underneath the ground…

Tunneling there

Winter to prepare

That’s why the swarming around?

TIME TO “PACK IT IN”

TIME TO PACK IT IN…!

Chrysanthemums were ragged,

The cabbage turning slaw,

When I came back for my shift

There were none left at all…

Landscapers had pulled up

Every single plant,…

But for the trees and bushes

The flora left was scant!

Stop talking with your neighbor

And I’ll tell you the rest,

They worked the soil adding things

As the edge footprints attest…

Preparing for the winter

Is nowhere a sin,

You have to cut your losses—

It’s time to pack it in!!!!

Most gardeners would leave them

Overwintering in place,

But at corporate headquarters

Messy gardens lose face…

Things neat and tidy–

The corporation creed,

So they clear out gardens that

Their P.R. work succeeds!

INSPECTION ROUND

INSPECTION ROUND

As the Springtime faeries wake

With the birds who sing…

And the Summertime fills with wings,

As faeries dance and swing—

Autumn faeries, of an age

To start slowing down…

Pick their way through berry and sage

And leaves littering the ground.

It’s these ones, beauteous in wisdom

That ready all the earth

At proper times in different climes

To sleep before rebirth…

Autumn leaves are raining down,

Making roofs for the little ones

Preparing for their season of rest

Just below the surface of ground!
