RAIN-FILLED TANKA

Heavy showers passed

Until the next down-pour blast…

Drying interlude:

People take their nightly walk,

With umbrellas close at hand!

THE LO-O-O-O-O-ONE GREAT BLUE HERON!

THE LO-O-O-O-O-ONE  GREAT   HERON!

 

On this darkening November day,

A Great Blue Heron assayed…

To fly overhead

A young driver said,

Across his lane of a rain-soaked highway.

–

He thought the bird would have flown

South before snow fall had grown…

His migratory

Knowledge of the story

Was rather poorly known!

–

Perhaps, like other types

Of migratory birds, he’d no gripes…

With staying around

And fish to be found,

So much for stereotypes.

–

Didn’t know if he’d see it again,

His late-staying feathered friend…

So he wished him a living

The day before Thanksgiving,

Whatever the future would portend.
