AUTUMNAL EQUINOX

As of ten o’clock this morning ’twas here,

Ending of summer for this year…

The picnics you knew

And the hotdogs chewed,

And friends bring memories’ cheer.

Remember when old and grey,

Bittersweet feelings today…

More coats–no bikinis–

Autumn weather, harvest gleanings–

Perhaps a good time by the bay?

Green turning brown,

Halloween candy’s around…

Colorful days

In cooling haze,

Thanksgiving…soon inbound!

BLACK FRIDAY HAIKU

BLACK FRIDAY HAIKU

Retailers do cheat,

Opening Thanksgiving Day…

Twenty-four hours straight!

Turkey menu week,

A big bird goes a long way…

Think manna, with wings!

Rush Limbaugh has found

The stories were turned around…

Dumb revisionists!!!!!

Trading partners they,

Rejoicing in Thanksgiving…

No socialists there!

LONG WEEKEND CLUES

LONG WEEKEND CLUES

I’m sure this isn’t news,

Things run out when used…

Coffee machines “oughter”

Have more than hot water,

But what’s a guy to do?

Parking lots empty fast,

As if a spell were cast…

And folks calling in

Can’t find anyone,

Business time’s nearly past.

Thanksgiving in the U.S.,

This Thursday doesn’t impress…

Retailers waiting

For Friday’s sale baiting

And American spending largess!

For those of Christian faith we eat,

Remembering our Savior’s complete…

Salvation for them

Survived till the Spring

And learned how to gather to eat.

-We praise the Lord God above,

Who suffered through Jesus in Love,

fOR ALL hIS BLESSING

(pLEASE PASS THE DRESSING?),

The taste of his mercies are sweet.

EARLY THANKSGIVING MORNING

EARLY THANKSGIVING MORNING…!

Driving home last night,

With one am. in sight…

I’m glad the roads dried

Before my ride,

Home in a wind that had bite.

Was happy to arrive at home,

The weariness caught when I groaned…

Getting out of the car

I’d gotten that far,

What a blessing to be back home!

SHOULD HAVE USED FLOUR…

SHOULD HAVE USED FLOUR…

Not bad for a simple Thanksgiving,

We had enough to eat…

I totally forgot the stuffing

To make the meal complete.

We had roasted rib eye and veggies

Done in a roasting bag….

I should have added some water,

For delicious gravy to snag.

We worked together on two apple pies,

One had added pineapple…

If I’d added flour to the apple mix

It might have the juices tackled.

We prayed before we ate,

She let me do it this time…

Praising God for blessings

And keeping us in our prime.

But all-in-all, it was a good meal

With a “no thank you” helping of onion…

I like onion’s flavor appeal,

But eat a whole one–lick a bunion!  🙂

HOLIDAY LONG WEEKEND

HOLIDAY LONG WEEKEND

(To “THE KING IS COMING”, one verse and the chorus)

The parking lot is empty,

All the offices are closed…

Many folks are heading out toward

Family on rain-slicked roads…

Houses filled with preparation

For the grandkids and sons’ wives,

Smells of baking and of cooking

We remember all our lives…..

THANKSGIVING is coming,

THANKSGIVING is coming,

Wednesday night will see a service

In the churches here around….

THANKSGIVING is coming,

THANKSGIVING is coming,

Oh, taste and find God’s firm ground!

THE THANKSGIVING WEEK SHUFFLE

THE THANKSGIVING WEEK SHUFFLE

So many folks on Monday,

Are determined to get away…

They’ll soon take off

To get aloft

To be where they’ll be on Thursday!

The Thankgiving Shuffle begins,

Not daunted by snow or high winds…

The early start

To a family’s heart,

On which strategy depends.

It is the most-traveled day,

Over Christmas, by the way…

To visit one’s kin

And shovel food in,

And a long weekend for recovery days!

SNOWBOUND THANKSGIVING?

SNOWBOUND THANKSGIVING?

In case of inclement weather,

We should all pull together…

Stock up the fridge

And build a bridge

Between family members!

The North East U.S.A.

Weather forecasters have assayed…

We’re in for a whack

From a storm track,

The kind from which blizzards are made.

It’s the biggest travel time of the year,

Getting to one’s family dear…

If we have snow

It’s gonna be slow,

The shedding of impatient tears!

I’ll be working that day,

Security needs to stay…

I’ll check my tires

While the home fires

Are readied for me–hooray!

Whether it’s snow or rain,

Travel will be the same…

Being careful

To reach that “lairful”

Of folks with related names.

WHAT WILL YOU BE HAVING?

WHAT WILL YOU BE HAVING?

(FOR THANKSGIVING)

The temptation we face this year

Is to totally steer clear…

A big turkey bird

For two is absurd,

We’d be eating on it till next year!

On Thanksgiving, not having turkey,

Is outlandish and very quirky…

Maybe a nice steak

Will give us a break,

The salt content’s high in beef jerky.

Other years a half-turkey breast,

Of half-turkeys I can’t attest…

Was enough—

Are they calling our bluff?

Do we need an intelligence test?

We’ve sometimes gotten by with ham,

But we’re under that “less salt” command…

And need less fat

The gravy has that,

Maybe Thanksgiving won’t be so grand!
